There are certainly shades of Sharp Objects, The Sinner, or Dirty John in Hulu’s foray into this territory, but The Act tells a darker story than the lot of them. Recent crime-based projects on television have explored this topic to successful effect. It’s a natural compulsion to want to please people and be loved, but this desire can also lead to the most toxic and conditional kind of love that hurts more than anything else.
